Do you go through different phases of breakfast choice? I go months having the same thing for breakfast then move onto something new! Past favourites have included overnight oats, granola or muesli and natural yoghurt or egg based like poached egg and crushed avocado on toast. But one that I keep coming back to is a healthy smoothie. I can pack in so many good ingredients and extra supplements, it is quick and easy and surprisingly satisfying and a healthy smoothie is good at keeping me full until lunchtime. Here are a few of my favourite healthy smoothie ingredients to really make your morning smoothie pack a nutritious punch! Start with the smoothie basics ...Oats and flaxseeds plus your choice of fruit or vegetable. I favour a selection of berries, banana, and avocado for example. Flaxseeds are the most amazing ingredient to add to your daily diet, this is what Alice Godfrey, Nutritionist told me: "Flaxseeds can be brilliant at bringing balance back to our hormone levels as they are a phytoestrogen so can replace the functions of some of the oestrogen we lose in menopause. And flaxseeds are a wonderful fibre and healthy fat which are important when there is low thyroid function." A good tip here is to keep bags of frozen smoothie ingredients ready to go. So have a bit of a prep time and add your favourites to a freezer bag - oats, flaxseeds, fruits, chopped banana. Or buy one of the frozen smoothie mixes like these ones from Ocado. There is nothing wrong with frozen fruit and vegetables. If you have leftover bananas that are going off, chop them and freeze them! Now start adding some extras to your smoothieNext we can add in supplement to help support our health and wellbeing, often you won't taste this ingredient but it is a quick and easy way to get them into your diet. Building a healthy smoothieGreen - spinach, watercress, cucumber ... Fruity - berries, apple, mango, peach ... Creamy - oats, banana, avocado, yoghurt ... Liquid - oat milk, nut milk, fruit juice, water ... Sweeten - if needed - cinnamon, honey, dates ... More protein - if needed - protein powder, nut butters, seeds ... Boost it - flaxseed, haskap berry, collagen, chia seeds, apple, cider vinegar ... For me, flaxseeds are essential but I also love adding the haskap berry (freeze dried), and adding collagen to a smoothie is quick and easy, I favour the small sachets from Prime Fifty. I use Fage Total Greek Yoghurt and Oat Milk. Adding apple cider vinegar is also quick and easy and has many health benefits. Put everything in your smoothie cup, whizz in your Nutribullet or Nutri Ninja and drink, or I prefer a smoothie bowl so I add a bit more yoghurt so it is thicker, top with some seeds, nuts or more fruit and enjoy! Smoothies on the moveAnother clever idea I came across recently is from FOGA and it is called the FOGAMATIC, this nifty cup is an automatic, rechargeable, on-the-go smoothie maker designed to be used with the FOGA Plantshakes, Oatshakes or Superfood Lattes. I tried it out, FOGA sent me a FOGAMATIC and a selection of shakes. My favourites were the FOGA Oatshakes as I prefer something thicker, they provide breakfast in 45 seconds. Low GI, high protein, organic and one of your five a day. Just add the sachet to the FOGAMATIC, add liquid - FOGA recommend water, milk or half and half, I preferred Oat Milk for the creamier taste. Make sure your FOGAMATIC is charged up (USB cable provided) and whizz up your shake. Ideal for breakfast, a morning snack, a post gym refuel or the afternoon slump! And the FOGAMATIC means you can take it anywhere and make a fresh smoothie, at work or at the gym for example. I found cleaning it a little challenging until I read the instructions again and realised that after rinsing you are advised to add water and a little washing-up liquid to the FOGAMATIC and whizz it up to auto clean, rinse and leave to dry. You can get your FOGA sachets on a monthly membership, or buy a FOGA starter kit to try them out! The FOGAMATIC can be bought separately and provides the perfect smooth, silky shake every time.
