Have you heard of the haskap berry? No I hadn't either! The haskap berry has a vibrant dark blue skin and a deep crimson flesh which contains remarkably high levels of anthocyanins - in fact 3-4 times more than blueberries. It is the new super super superfood and is available as an easy to use dried berry powder from Haskapa. It is remarkably easy to use in our diets and has amazing benefits! The haskap berry is an edible blue honeysuckle, native to northern hemisphere countries including Canada, Japan and Russia. Haspaka was founded by British husband and wife team, Evie, a medical doctor and Simon, a 'green' entrepreneur. They fell in love with the amazing benefits of the haskap berry and found a way to combine their passions for the environment, holistic health and ethical business by growing the berries at their farm in Nova Scotia, Canada. They initially created a juice from the haskap berry and won an award for it but Evie felt there was more to this berry and harnessing its health benefits. Evenutally after years of research and product development, a freeze-dried powder was created. Evie and Simon are proud to be taking the haskap berry to the wider world and sharing it's huge wellbeing benefits. They own and run their own farm in Nova Scotia! The farming side of Haskapa has grown from 25 acres to more than 60 acres at Lone Tree Farm. The farm is managed by Farmer Cynthia and they have created a place where nature can thrive with bees, soil health and ecological management combining to create all-natural berry farming and they are currently working towards organic status. I asked Evie and Simon how they ended up with a farm in Nova Scotia! It is not on most peoples to do lists ... they told me they fell in love with the beautiful scenery, friendly people, great music and outdoor activities during a family holiday there in 2007. Simon had just finished a reforestation project in Ghana and wanted to manage his own woodland, they discovered that woodland in Nova Scotia was a fraction of the UK price. So in 2010 they bought their first farm. But making money responsibly out of the woodland takes many years of careful management so they decided they should grow something on the farmland to make it all more financial viable! They did their research and discovered the haskap berry on Google! Since then this little super berry has taken over their lives! How can we use the Haskapa berry powder in our diets every day? The benefits are vast - antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardio-protective, neuro-protective and it has a role in sports nutrition. Plus it tastes good! To embrace these benefits scientists recommend we consume 50mg of anthocyanins per day, this is the equivalent of just one teaspoon of Haskapa berry powder. Anthocyanins are naturally occurring plant pigments that give fruit and vegetables their deep purple, blue and red colours. Haskap berries contain up to four times more anthocyanins and three times more antioxidants than blueberries. The Haskapa berry powder is so simple to add into our diets, there are some delicious recipes on the Haskapa website but it is really easy to just add one teaspoon per day to a breakfast smoothie, stir into a yoghurt or add to overnight oats or porridge. The Haskapa berry powder is also brilliant in baking and desserts as it adds a natural colour and a unique taste. I have had the opportunity to join two online press events with Haskapa recently and have tried out a few of their recipes. Most recently I joined an Instagram live with Haskapa and Rebel Recipes. I can't express just how easy it is to add a teaspoon to your regular recipes though, I have the Haskapa storage jar on my worktop alongside my other daily supplements and I just add a teaspoon to my breakfast smoothie. It tastes delicious, gives the smoothie a rich crimson colour and I know I am getting all these health benefits. Having listened to Evie and Simon speak, I loved their story and their passion for the haskap berry. It was amazing to hear about their decision to buy a farm in Nova Scotia! And they have turned it into something inspirational and groundbreaking, to know that you are creating such a brilliant product and one that can really make a difference to the health of so many and is easy to use, what a story! You can buy their berry powder online at Haskapa and I would recommend the Subscribe & Save option and do consider buying the Haskapa storage jar as well, this makes it so much easier to use as well as keeping the berry powder fresh and dry and locking in the nutritional content. Well done to Evie and Simon for your ability to believe in something and create a business to benefit the health of so many.
