Lockdown has meant we have all been coming up with new ways to socialise, to learn and to relax. My friend last week was telling me about a wine tasting at home evening she had on zoom with her friends. What a fabulous idea! I was asked recently if I'd like to try out the service offered by The Wine List, of course I did, wine is my new friend during lockdown (don't judge me, a nice chilled glass of white in the garden with the sun shining reminds me of holidays)! The Wine List is a new way to discover wine and learn new skills at the same time. It is a monthly subscription service, and over 12 months you will learn all the principles for choosing and enjoying wine. Every month you will be sent - two delicious and unusual bottles of wine, one wine principle and two tasting cards. You do not need to commit to 12 months though - see later, the subscription can be cancelled at any time. Do you just buy the same wines from the supermarket, do you look at a wine list in a restaurant and just guess or go for the house wine, would you like to take a bottle of wine to a dinner party and know you have chosen the best and can tell your friends about it? I know my knowledge is, well I was going to say limited, but to be honest it is non-existent! The Wine List wants to put that right. You can learn while you taste! And your 12 month subscription will build up into a beautiful folder full of useful information you can refer back to time and time again. And you can have fun learning every month! I decided to take my bottle of white with me to my parents house for our (socially distant) birthday celebration with my mum, she has just turned 76, and I met with them and my two sisters on a lovely sunny day in their gorgeous garden. The white I was sent was a bottle of Bico de Ran from winemaker Eulogio Pomares - 2018, a Spanish wine that pairs nicely with lighter meats and seafood, perfect for our al fresco lunch. I made sure it was beautifully chilled and we all agreed it was indeed a really lovely wine. Eulogio picks his grapes early in the morning when it is cold. Doing this helps to concentrate the aromas and flavours and gives the winemaker more control in the winery. It also produces a very crisp white wine. The bottle didn't last long! The red wine I received is Casa Castillo Monastrell from winemaker Casa Castillo - 2017, it is again a Spanish wine that is high in tannins and with its high acidity it is perfect with meats and rich dishes. I've not tried this one yet! I love red wine with steak (no possibility of turning vegan for me) so I am planning on an evening at home with a lovely tender steak from the butchers. Information from the card provided with this wine tells me that if you think of a Spanish red as a heavy Rioja, then this one is different! It is fresh and vibrant and almost jubilant in colour, red cherries, some floral underpinning and spice fill the nose. Keep an eye on my insta-stories and I will share my thoughts when I try it. The Wine List aims to bring you wines that will be characteristic, hard to find and delicious, they want to show you as many wines as possible from every grape-growing region around the world, the longer term plan is to import their own wines so they can share wines usually only enjoyed locally. The Wine List costs £39 per month, and your first delivery will include an introduction to wine tasting, two fabulous bottles of wine (worth at least £16 each), interactive tasting cards and your learning plan. And there is a code below that will give you a fantastic 30% off your first box! Your subscription is fully flexible though so you can cancel at any time or miss a delivery - there is no minimum contract. As well as a treat for yourself, it would also make a fantastic gift for someone - like a husband that is difficult to buy for! If you email The Wine List they will help by setting up an automatic cancellation after an agreed time period. And if you love one of the wines sent to you, you can buy more! The Wine List have a surplus wine page where you can order from (depending on availability). And finally I have a fantastic discount code to share with you. You can get 30% off your first box using the code TAKE30OFF at checkout from The Wine List website here. Happy tasting! Cheers from me! If you give it a go, let me know!
