If you are a regular reader of my blog then you will know that I have been on a mission to improve my health, sleep better and overcome the challenges that menopause and being over 50 have bought me. I often share my thoughts and what has worked for me. Indeed one of the main motivators for starting my blog was for some accountability! I was contacted recently by Serious Readers and asked if I would like to try, and write about, one of their specialist reading lights. One of my goals has been to reduce screen time and therefore blue light and read more at bedtime to help improve my sleep quality - so I was really interested in finding out more. I chose the Serious Readers Alex Floor Light with a lightweight base so I can move it easily and a brass finish to complement the decor in my house. I had two places I wanted to try the light. In my bedroom for bedtime reading and in my lounge for close-up tasks like sewing and reading. Serious Readers manufacture (local to me it turns out, in Aylesbury) the worlds best reading lights which help maximise your ability to see detail, minimise eye strain and optimise your posture and wellbeing. As I am well aware, as part of the natural ageing process, our eyes deteriorate. I have needed reading glasses since I was 40 and more recently moved over to varifocal lenses to avoid the constant on and off! In addition my sleep hasn't been great in the past and I have made a conscious decision to avoid blue light in the evening, read more at bedtime and put the smartphone down. The Serious Light does not use the harmful blue light found in most household lighting and this eradicates the risk of damage to the retina and minimises disturbance to our body clock. A Serious Light allows us to see detail and colour indoors - a bit like when we want to see something more clearly we move to a window for the daylight - not always convenient though! Your eyes can relax and see finer detail without any of the strain. The light also allows us to read in comfort, in a position that suits our posture. It has a flexible arm with rotating swivel joints so you can set it up exactly how you want it. When I tried it for bedtime reading I was able to lower the arm right down so that it was focused immediately above my book and didn't light up the whole room. Then for reading or sewing in my lounge I could adjust it to shine where I needed it without disturbing the rest of the family. You can also add in the option of a dimmer switch which I found particularly useful. Our modern lifestyles mean we can often end up spending more time indoors using artificial light. This results in more potential for eye strain, headaches and tiredness. Serious Lights use Daylight Wavelength Technology - a natural balanced bright light beam close to the daylight that our eyes are built to use. I will add that it is so important to get outside as much as possible for our well being and a daily dose of fresh air and Vitamin D - but if we can improve the conditions indoors too then that can only have a benefit on our health. My Serious Light arrived well packaged in a large box and it was easy to assemble with full instructions and clear information. The lights may be an investment purchase but the long term benefits are worthwhile. If you love reading, if you suffer from eye strain and headaches or if you enjoy hobbies that require close up work, the use of colour and attention to detail then I would absolutely consider one as an investment in your health and well being. It would make such a lovely addition to your own little reading nook! Serious Readers also offer a 30 day risk free trial period - so if you don't like it or it doesn't meet expectations then you can return your light for a full refund (they will come and collect it and refund in full including any delivery charges). There are three versions of the floor light - all designed by readers for readers with the sole purpose of helping you to see! Each version is also available as a desk lamp and finally they have wall mounted lights too. Every light in their range is stylish and modern with a selection of different options so you can personalise to your requirements - their website offers a Build Your Own section where you are led through a series of questions to make sure you get exactly what you need from your light. Over 500 independent opticians believe that Serious Lights relieve the frustrating symptoms of eye strain. Serious Lights can be purchased directly from their website here. I chose the Alex Floor Light, follow this link for more information.
