A state-of-the-art treatment for bladder leakage and urinary incontinence, giving amazing results, read my review of the BTL Emsella Chair

That moment when you know you are going to sneeze ... when you have to prepare by crossing your legs and hoping for the best ... also known as stress incontinence, it is something we are often too embarrassed to talk about but it is estimated that it affects 9.6 million women in the UK, it is twice as common in women than men and it affects women of any age, although is more prevalent after childbirth and it does become more pronounced as we reach midlife and our peri-menopause and postmenopause years.

I noticed some stress incontinence after having my two babies, both were vaginal births and my son was a ventouse delivery, putting me at slightly higher risk of urinary incontinence. However, despite being told to do my kegel exercises (pelvic floor exercises) by my midwife and at my NCT classes, I wasn't as committed as I knew I should have been. Even though I did try to remember 'in the queue at Sainsbury's' which seemed to be the general advice, the reality was I was too busy thinking of other things, like keeping my baby happy! The other prompt I seem to remember was 'can you stop a wee mid-flow?' Then along came menopause and I initially escaped any worsening of my symptoms until early in 2022 when my HRT stopped working and my menopause symptoms returned, or in the case of my intimate health, seemed to start.

This is a gifted blog post.

The BTL Emsella Chair for bladder leakage and urinary incontinence
I had heard of the BTL Emsella Chair and had been lucky enough to try a treatment at the S-Thetics event 'Beyond Aesthetics' earlier in the summer, I had also chatted at length to the senior management team at BTL and had been very impressed to learn about the results from this breakthrough treatment for incontinence.

Also known endearingly as 'the happy chair' or the 'kegel throne' it is beloved of celebrities like Lisa Snowdon and Saira Khan and it is notable that women are increasingly happy to talk about the more embarrassing symptoms of childbirth and menopause, in a bid to support others. The more honest we are, the more other women will come forward and seek treatment, modern technologies and an open approach to our health mean we don't need to suffer in silence.

When I felt that my quality of life was being impacted by my weak pelvic floor muscles, I was keen to try out this special chair and see if it really could help with urinary incontinence symptoms and intimate health.

I felt incredibly lucky to be invited to experience a full course of Emsella sessions as part of my 'Core to Floor' treatment plan with the S-Thetics Clinic in Beaconsfield. In summary, I am blown away by the results I have had from my 6 Emsella sessions but read on to learn more about the process and who it can help!

Sit and read a book during your 28-minute Emsella treatment!

The 4 main types of urinary incontinence

Stress incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine on exertion such as coughing, laughing, sneezing or exercise. It is often caused by childbirth but can also be caused by pelvic surgery, hysterectomy or prostate surgery following prostate cancer for example.
Urge incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine associated with an urgent need to urinate, this type of urinary incontinence often occurs later in life.
Overflow incontinence is when you have the urge to urinate but can only release a small amount.
Mixed incontinence is a combination of both stress and urge incontinence.

As you can see urine leakage and incontinence affects both men and women and at any age. But with the right knowledge and understanding it is possible to prevent and treat urinary incontinence and see a significant improvement in symptoms.

The Emsella Chair uses HIFEM technology to strengthen pelvic floor muscles in both men and women, it is an easy 28-minute treatment.

What does the Emsella Chair do?

The Emsella Chair is a non-invasive treatment that can repair and tighten the pelvic floor to prevent the common problem of urinary incontinence and help with intimate wellbeing.

There is no downtime, it is a non-surgical treatment, and during each 28-minute session you will sit comfortably, fully clothed, reading a book or chatting to a friend whilst experiencing thousands of supramaximal pelvic floor muscle contractions, each session is the equivalent of 11000 pelvic floor exercises but without any of the hard work!

Am I a good candidate for a course of Emsella treatments?

You will be offered an initial complimentary consultation to discuss your suitability for the treatment, the Emsella Chair is a great option for men or women with mild to moderate incontinence issues and it is also helpful if you are feeling a loss of sexual satisfaction.

You are unable to have Emsella treatments if you have any kind of electronic devices or metal implants i.e. a pacemaker or a copper coil IUD.

Can the Emsella Chair help with intimate satisfaction?

For women as we age so we often lose vaginal laxity and this can result in a difficulty in reaching orgasm. We should not be embarrassed about seeking help. Emsella can assist in improving our sex life and may even assist with vaginal dryness or tightness.

For men who are experiencing some erectile dysfunction or early ejaculation, then Emsella can help to strengthen the pelvic floor which can really improve these health conditions.

How long do the results from Emsella last?

The results from the Emsella Chair are considered to be semi-permanent, and it is advised that you have a boosting treatment every 3-6 months to maintain your results.

I had 6 treatment sessions over 3 weeks, this meant two a week spaced out every 3-4 days, I will then have a follow-up treatment in 3 months.  I plan to have regular maintenance treatments (at. my own cost).

What does Emsella feel like?

Well you are simply sat on a chair, you need to sit with your legs slightly wider apart, and you will be directed to make sure your pelvic floor is in contact with the correct spot on the chair. You soon get used to it and finding that 'sweet spot' becomes easy.

Emsella is absolutely not painful or uncomfortable in any way. It is a completely non-sexual sensation, you will feel a series of tapping and flicking at varying intensities as the Emsella machine uses the electromagnetic technology to create pelvic floor contractions and start to build strong pelvic floor muscles while you relax and read a magazine or a book. The treatment time is 28 minutes and will start off very gently until you reach 100% intensity.

Does Emsella actually work?  My results ...

I am super impressed with my results so far! Without a doubt I will continue to have top-up maintenance treatments in the future. The first follow-up appointment is included in the cost of the Emsella course and is carried out 3 months after your initial sessions.

I felt a benefit as early as my first treatment but I really began to notice changes after treatment number 3 or 4. I no longer get urine leaks and do not need to use pads or panty liners. I have also felt a benefit when sneezing or coughing. I recently had to have a small gynae procedure and was reassured that a very mild uterine prolapse had not worsened and was not causing any issues, generally all was healthy and as it should be!

The results from Emsella are measurable and obvious, from no longer wearing pads to knowing you can exercise without worry.  And that has to be worth it!

Is Emsella worth the money?

I think so!  The cost of a course of Emsella treatments is coming down all the time as more and more clinics are able to offer Emsella and more and more women and men are choosing to try the Emsella chair.

It is an investment in our health and wellbeing, for now and in the future.  Even those that have not yet seen any issues can benefit from future proofing - pre-childbirth or at perimenopause, we can build muscle, elevate and strengthen our pelvic floor to pre-juvenate and preempt!

Miss Balaratnam, Medical Director of S-Thetics, explained that we all lose 1% of skeletal muscle every year from around age 25-35 and that adds up and creates a loss of tone, volume and thickness that becomes more pronounced in our 50s and beyond.  Our pelvic floor muscles are there to hold up and support our bladder, our vaginal canal and our back passage and the Emsella treatments can build and elevate so that many patients see a 70-100% improvement in their symptoms.   If you'd like to see Miss Balaratnam talking about Emsella please visit my Instagram highlights.

How does Emsella work?

Emsella uses HIFEM energy to cause deep and intense pelvic contractions in the entire pelvic floor area, it is a comfortable treatment and the electromagnetic pulses restore and treat your pelvic muscles to help with the different types of incontinence from mild to moderate and can give an improvement in intimate wellbeing.

A life-changing treatment for urinary incontinence and intimate satisfaction
Please don't suffer in silence, seek help and advice, the S-Thetics clinic in Beaconsfield are very happy to offer a free initial consultation and a trial treatment so you can find out more and experience the treatment for yourself.  They also offer very good value for money if you book a full course of treatments and are happy to discuss a payment plan.

I believe that the Emsella Chair is a life-changing treatment for many women (and men) and can make a massive difference in eradicating an embarrassing problem we hate to admit to - urinary incontinence.  Your confidence and quality of life will certainly improve!

If you do decide to seek out an Emsella treatment plan, make sure you work with an experienced clinic who can monitor your progress and suggest alternatives if necessary.  S-Thetics is a doctor led clinic with a wealth of knowledge and understanding.
