How to blow dry your hair fast without damage!  Is the Zuvi Halo Hair Dryer the 'Future of Haircare'?

8/6/2023

Finally the hair dryer is getting a makeover and we are seeing a burst of new designs and innovative technology coming to the market.  And they not only blow dry our hair faster but are also able to protect and care for our hair!  Haircare is moving forward and at home blow drying is getting easier.

My hair is naturally kinky, not quite straight hair, not quite curly hair either and for most of my adult years I kept it short and cropped because it was easier to style.  But when my daughter was born in 2000, suddenly I wanted longer, softer, prettier, girly hair!  I started growing it but I remember the inbetween phase being a bit of a nightmare to manage.  I persevered and was delighted when I could finally afford the original GHD hair straightener!  It was a revelation and made keeping my hair long possible and styling easier.  But of course over use of straighteners in particular will cause heat damage and dry hair and I have certainly had hair breakage and thinner sections.  Although HRT has improved the condition of my hair, I still need to be mindful of not over using hot styling tools.  My hair can get quite frizzy on a damp, rainy day, and frizzy hair is no fun, those pesky curls reappear and head in ridiculous directions leaving me feeling very self-conscious.

I tend to wash my hair every day, I don't get on very well with dry shampoo, and air drying it naturally isn't an option, I look like the Mad Professor, so I want to keep my morning routine and blow-drying time to a minimum, but maximise healthy hair!

I've owned both th GHD hair dryer and more recently the Dyson hair dryer which I love, so could it get any better?  Well I was recently sent the Zuvi Halo Hair Dryer to try out and review!  And the good news is that it does get better, the Zuvi Halo provides faster drying, shinier and healthier hair.

Read on to find out how I got on using the Zuvi Halo and my top tips for fast drying and minimal damage ...

Reviewing the Zuvi Halo Hair Dryer with it's innovative LightCare technology

Start with the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type

Wash twice with your chosen shampoo then condition, use a good deep conditioner at least once a week.  Ideally don't wash your hair every day!  And a blast of cold water at the end of washing is really good for your hair if you can manage it!  The cold water keeps your scalp cleaner for longer as it closes the pores making it less vulnerable to oil and dirt, it helps control breakage, frizz and flyaway hair and improves blood circulation.

Wrap wet hair in a towel turban

Wrapping your just washed, wet hair in a towel turban, will mean less damage and friction, rubbing and towel drying is not recommended!  The turban will lock in moisture and leave your hair less frizzy, it will also absorb excess water and reduce the drying time. Plus they are easier to use and more likely to stay put than a normal towel!  I wash my hair in the shower, put my turban on and let it dry my hair a little while I apply my makeup.  My daughter with her naturally curly hair often uses a cotton t-shirt, this method is known as hair plopping!!  John Lewis sell an excellent Argan Oil Hair Wrap.

Use a wide-toothed comb or wet brush

Next you should comb your hair gently with either a wide-tooth comb or the specially designed WetBrush, wet hair is especially vulnerable to breakage and a wet brush or comb is much more gentle and puts less pressure on the hair strands.

Then select a good quality heat protectant

I like to use a leave-in conditioner, I am not keen on oil based treatments and too much product tends to weight my hair down.  A spray will give even application, and allow you to apply to the ends of your hair where it can be drier.  I like a soft, natural, manageable finish but using a heat protection spray is essential for reducing hair damage so don't skip this step!

Divide your hair into small sections

I use three butterfly clips to section my hair (sides and back), but the longer hair sectioning clips are also a good choice.  I section my hair to rough dry before styling and to style as well, I just find that for me this is the best way to manage my wavy hair!

Healthy hair means beautiful hair, and the Zuvi Halo provides faster drying, shinier and healthier hair

Zuvi Halo Hair Dryer

The Zuvi Halo uses innovative LightCare technology, the safe infrared light and high-speed air are designed to mimic the natural process of sun and wind evaporating rain drops!  It is a completely new way of drying hair and can bring damaged hair back to life, giving you more shine and healthier hair.

The drying process with LightCare is gentle and more comfortable, maintaining a lower temperature of 44 degrees celsius compared to a traditional hair dryer that heats to 70 degrees celsius!  The cooler temperature is also fantastic for hot flushes and heatwave weather - who else gets hot and flustered during hair drying!?  LightCare locks in your hair colour and maintains a stronger hair shaft, the hair cuticle remains flat which results in more smoothness and shiny hair.

The science bit ... whilst the surface of our hair should be dry, we actually want to retain a natural level of moisture inside!  A traditional hair dryer will over dry the hair resulting in split ends and breakage but LightCare from Halo keeps the moisture in ensuring the hair is strong!

The Zuvi Halo has 4 separate drying modes:

Care - which uses a smart sensor to control the level of wind and heat to protect your hair.
Fast - provides the strongest wind and heat setting for faster drying. Ideal to start your hair drying, use until your hair is about 60-70% dry.
Soft - giving a lighter wind and heat level for a gentler drying experience.
Style - to use with the styling attachment to straighten or curl hair.

There are also 3 attachment accessories:

A gentle attachment for those with a sensitive scalp.
A diffuser to lock in and define curly hair and reduce frizz.
A styling concentrator for precise and focused airflow for the ultimate sleek blow dry.

The Zuvi Halo Hair Dryer has won multiple awards, including Stylist Best Beauty Awards and TIME Best Inventions.

How to dry and style your hair using the Zuvi Halo

Start off on FAST mode with no attachment, the green aurora light will come on and you want to get your hair around 70% dry.  If you have a more sensitive scalp or fine hair, choose CARE and add the gentle attachment.

Next, add your preferred styling attachment, either the diffuser or concentrator, switch to STYLE mode and use the airflow closer to your hair to create your chosen style!

Once you get used to the Zuvi Halo you can adjust the settings to suit your hair type and preferred style.

It's as simple as that ... dry your hair in less time and with minimal damage.

Choose the best hair styling brushes and hair tools

This is such a personal choice, I love the extensive range from Kent, my essential hair tools include a round brush, a paddle brush, a WetBrush and a hair sectioning comb, I have the Boots Professional Pain Tail Comb, it is perfect for detangling and separating hair easily.

Avoid over straightening!

Yes I know, I love my straighteners and I can't live without them but the high heat is not good for our hair!  Straightening irons save me so much time and hassle, even with the best hair dryer, the right hair products and the perfect brushes, I'm still not great at getting the same results as my hairdresser!  But hair straighteners are getting better and better and like hair dryers, days of using intense heat are coming to an end, and our hair health is now more of a priority.  But if you focus on the best technique for straight hair from the moment you wash it (use a coconut shampoo for example) and reduce your drying time and drying heat by using the Zuvi Halo Hair Dryer then you will get better results and improve your hair structure.

What did I think, how did I get on with the Zuvi Halo Hair Dryer?

Firstly, it takes time to adjust to a new method of drying hair, it wasn't an immediate love at first use moment but I was very impressed with the reduced heat and the high speed. I loved the design of the Halo, the white vegan grip on the handle feels comfortable, the hair dryer is lightweight and easy to hold.  It has a long cord so I didn't need to use my extension cable (good for hotel rooms and Airbnbs who never seem to have a socket near a mirror)!  I also adored the quieter sound!  And the strong magnetic clasps for the attachments, they felt robust and properly attached, less likely to fall off (my current one does).  Because it is a lighter weight I also like how it will be easier to travel with.  I tend to take my own hair dryer on holiday as I am used to it and hair dryers in holiday homes are often 'cheap and useless'!  Don't even get me started on those ones that attach to bathroom walls!  I had one at a ski hotel a few years ago, my hair looked dreadful the entire week.

But for the ultimate test, I took the Zuvi Halo with me to my hairdresser last week!  She was intrigued by the new technology, hadn't heard of Zuvi yet and was very happy to try it out and dry my hair with it.  She liked that it was lightweight and quieter - a particular gripe for hairdressers - trying to chat over the noise!  She liked the concept of LightCare and agreed that anything that reduces heat damage on our hair has to be positive.  She didn't feel it was very 'hairdresser friendly' in terms of grip and she struggled to rest it down whilst adjusting her brush position but then the Zuvi Halo is not designed for professional use, so probably not a fair way to judge it.  In terms of at home use, the grip is great and I don't put it down while it is on.  She agreed that it dried my hair faster but couldn't be more specific as we only used it once but she said it is certainly a hair dryer she would like to try again.  She felt my hair did look shinier when it was styled and agreed it felt soft and light but with more volume.

How does my hair feel ... after drying my hair with the Zuvi Halo it feels softer and lighter and I am sure it is shinier!   It definitely takes time to adjust to a new way of drying your hair, I am not used to rough drying then styling, I tend to use my brush and start styling immediately.  But my hair has felt thicker, it has more volume and a soft texture, but it was still smooth. The blow-dry time is reduced and it felt good not to overheat, a game changer for hot days, holidays and menopause days!

In my opinion there are lots of good reasons to try the Zuvi Halo Hair Dryer, it takes a lot of the hard work out of hair drying and although it is a more expensive dryer I do think it is worth it.  In terms of cost per use .... I have my hair dryers for years and use it daily ... Zuvi offer a 30-day money back guarantee and the Zuvi Halo comes with a 2-year warranty and lifetime customer support.
