The 6 benefits of a silk pillowcase for hair, skin and sleep | why you won't regret buying a silk pillowcase!

We spend a lot of time asleep, approximately a third of our lives in fact!  So let's make it the best, most comfortable sleep possible.  I am always a bit wary of the enthusiastic claims that one product can change your life and make you look ten years younger, there is certainly a lot of hype about the hair and skin benefits of sleeping on a silk pillowcase, but do they live up to that hype?  I love my silk pillowcases and have been using them for years ... read on to find out why they are worthwhile investment (and get 10% off at the new Hydralun Silk Pillowcase from Bed Lab)!

The benefits of sleeping on a silk pillowcase

The 6 benefits of sleeping on a silk pillowcase

  1. Hypoallergenic - a pure silk pillowcase is ideal for those with sensitive skin, dry skin and allergies.  The main component of the silk fabric is fibroin (a protein) which provides the strength, sheen, breathability and hypoallergenic properties of silk, it means the surface of the silk pillowcase will naturally repel germs, bacteria and other irritants and make a big difference especially to acne-prone skin.
  2. Breathable and thermoregulating - silk is a naturally breathable fabric which is excellent at regulating your temperature, the airflow of the silk fabric means less moisture, it keeps you cool in hot weather and warm when it is cold, silk also wicks away any moisture to keep you dry (cotton sheets absorb moisture and stay wet).
  3. Resists dust mites - these can thrive in bedding fabrics like cotton but the smooth surface of silk and the antimicrobial properties make it difficult for dust mites to inhabit the silk which means less risk of allergic reactions and dust mite allergies. Silk is therefore a really good choice for those prone to hayfever, the right bedding can improve congestion and irritation and the tightly woven silk fibers prevent pollen from getting trapped, resulting in a better sleep.
  4. Easy care - no need to be nervous of caring for your silk pillowcase, it can be machine washed (hand wash on a cold delicate cycle) and then gently ironed.
  5. Anti-ageing skin - a silk pillowcase causes fewer wrinkles because the smooth fabric creates less friction, meaning it doesn't tug at your delicate facial skin as much as cotton for example.  Whilst not a miracle anti-ageing breakthrough, you might notice less sleep creases when you wake up in the morning!
  6. Prevents split ends - silk is much gentler on your hair and the smooth surface and luxurious feel of the fabric, produces less friction that can result in less hair breakage, tangling and frizzy hair, it is particularly beneficial for those with curly hair. Less bad hair days and less hair washing is a winner for me!

How to choose a silk pillowcase

There are beauty benefits for choosing silk over a regular pillowcase but for a good night's sleep and the best quality, which silk pillowcase should you choose?

  • The quality of the silk is determined by a metric called momme, it measures the silk density and weight, so the greater the momme the higher the quality and the longer its lifespan. most silk pillowcases range from 19 to 22 momme so ideally look for the higher 22 momme, this will be the highest quality silk you can buy.
  • Only buy silk pillowcases made from 100% pure Mulberry silk (and not a silk blend) and make sure that the pillowcase is made from silk on both sides, a double sided silk pillowcase means you can turn it over and extend its use between washes.
  • Look for a silk pillowcase with an invisible zip, this will ensure the pillow stays in place all night and it gives a neater finish to your bed than the traditional envelope style.
  • Make sure the silk pillowcase you choose has been independently tested under OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 to ensure it is non-toxic and free from harmful chemicals and dyes.

Bed Lab Mulberry Silk Pillowcase with Hydralun

Bed Lab have just launched the world's very first anti-ageing silk pillowcase with the added benefit of being infused with a unique Hydralun formula which combines Hyaluronic Acid, Argan Oil and Mulberry Silk to hydrate skin, reduce wrinkles and promote skin elasticity.

The Bed Lab Mulberry Silk pillowcase has really impressed me, it is made from 22 momme, premium grade 6A fabric on both sides.  But most importantly it feels amazing, it has a thick, smooth texture, looks and feels high quality, it isn't flimsy or thin so the pillow underneath does not show through.  I have noticed less irritation and better skin since starting to use the Bed Lab silk pillowcase two months ago.  I've also washed it and can testify that it does wash very well and is quick and easy to iron (if you iron)!

The unique Bed Lab Hydralun formula uses microcapsule technology to combine silk fabrics with Hyaluronic Acid and Argan Oil.  Microencapsulation is a process where tiny particles or droplets are encased in a thin coating to form small capsules with useful properties and all the benefits above.
