The benefits of a silk pillowcase with a cooling pillow

When I was asked if I would like to try out a new cooling pillow and a mulberry silk pillowcase from The Fine Bedding Company, I was really keen!  One of my most popular blog posts is about choosing the best duvet for menopause where I recommend swapping to a wool duvet!  So clearly menopausal night sweats and hot flushes are a big challenge for many of my readers.  But what are the benefits of a silk pillowcase?  And what is a cooling pillow!?

What are the benefits of a silk pillowcase?

• A silk pillowcase can help prevent frizzy, tangled hair and help keep your hair in better condition, so you wake up not needing to wash it every day or do a complete restyle!
• Silk keeps your skin hydrated so you wake up looking less wrinkled (think facial creases from laying down all night), but remember a good skincare routine with the right products is still a priority!
• Silk is a good temperature regulator and wicks away moisture at night.

So it does seem that a silk pillowcase for hair, skin and temperature has some fabulous benefits!

​What is the best silk pillowcase?

If you have decided to invest in a silk pillowcase then look for 100% Mulberry Silk!  I have had a couple in the past (from a well-known department store) and not been overly impressed but I am really loving the quality of the silk pillowcase from The Fine Bedding Company.  It is very soft and smooth and has washed well - remember to wash your silk pillowcase inside out, on a gentle cold wash and line dry, I then steamed mine with my steam generator iron and it was good to go!  They are not cheap and it is a big investment so worth looking after it!  But remember you will have it for years and if it helps your skin, hair and sleep quality then absolutely worthwhile - and it looks fabulous and feels good to sleep on!

Is it worth buying a cooling pillow for menopause night sweats?

The Smart Temperature Pillow is medium support and I found it to be very comfortable but of course it is personal preference!  It is made using a unique Advanced Cooling technology which delivers both instant and continuous cooling. to make sure you feel comfortable throughout the night.  The casing is a sustainably sourced cotton.  It is very clever how it all works!  It offers a cooling sensation before the first sign of moisture but it can also sense an increase in body temperature which then activates a cooling effect allowing moisture to evaporate mimicking the body's own natural cooling mechanism.  Once the body has reached optimum temperature it will then ease back so you don't feel too cold!  The technology works through any pillowcase and protector.

The pillow is easy to wash at home and dries quickly and this does not affect the technology!

How to choose the right pillow

As a general guide you should consider your sleep position when choosing a pillow:

Soft, if you sleep on your front.
Medium, if you sleep on your back.
Firm, if you sleep on our side.
