Collaborative Post | There are few more popular sports in the United Kingdom for those aged 50 and over than horse racing. For those in the key racing demographic, betting is extremely popular throughout the year, with key British meetings available at TwinSpires. However, the popularity of the equine sport is nothing new, with racing ranking only second to football in terms of the most attended sports in the United Kingdom, with a reported six million people annually passing through the gates at British racecourses. But, what are some of the top events on the calendar for those aged 50 and over to visit throughout the year? Cheltenham FestivalThere are few more popular sporting events in Britain than the Cheltenham Festival. Regarded as the ‘race-lovers’ festival, the four-day meet at the Cotswolds attracts fans from far and wide to witness legends of jump racing be born. The opening day of the Festival kicks off with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, with the Cheltenham roar heard from miles away, while the key championship race on the opening day is the Champion Hurdle. Wednesday’s feature is the prestigious Queen Mother Champion Chase, while Thursday sees competitive Grade Ones such as the Stayers’ Hurdle and Ryanair Chase. However, the Blue Riband event of the National Hunt season is saved for the final day of the Festival, with the Cheltenham Gold Cup being run over a marathon three miles and two furlongs. Legendary equine stars such as Best Mate, Kauto Star, and Denman have transcended the sport with their dominant performances in the gruelling stamina-sapping test, and Galopin Des Champs will be bidding to join the plethora of greats in 2026 by winning the race for a third time. Royal AscotWhile the Cheltenham Festival is largely saved for the most passionate racing fans, there is a completely different feel at the five-day Royal Ascot meet. While still focusing on action on track, a day at Ascot is as much about fashion and the experience of a day out than it is the performances on course. Ascot is rightly regarded as one of the best tracks in global racing, with its open nature being welcoming for fans, giving visitors the opportunity to freely roam between the Parade Ring, the Betting Ring, and the Grandstands. Royal Ascot is Britain’s most valuable flat meet of the season, with over £7 million being up for grabs. Over 500 horses compete on track throughout the week, with some of the biggest betting heats surrounding the eight Group Ones, headlined by the prestigious Ascot Gold Cup. Summer Racing at NewmarketNothing says a summer at the racing more so than a trip to the idyllic Newmarket Racecourse. The traditional home to flat races, and commonly known at HQ, is home to two of the five British Classics during the season, kicking off with the Guineas meeting in early May. However, it is during the summer that the track comes alive with an excellent blend of high-quality racing and off-track entertainment. Throughout June and July, the track puts on afternoon action, before the stage is taken by some of the most recognisable acts in music. Previously, artists such as Tom Jones and Kylie Minogue have performed at the course, while an extensive list of artists have already been announced for 2026 dates, including Five, Madness, Craig David and the Kaiser Chiefs. Dublin Racing FestivalWhile not in Britain, the Dublin Racing Festival at Leopardstown is quickly becoming the alternative to an expensive day at the Cheltenham Festival. Around 30% of those in attendance at the two-day meeting in 2026 were from Britain; meaning that a staggering 10,000 fans are now travelling across the Irish Sea to see the best that Ireland has to offer. On track, there are few higher-quality racedays on the racing schedule, with four Grade Ones set for Saturday, including the Irish Gold Cup. This trend continues onto Sunday, with four further Grade Ones headlined by the Irish Champion Hurdle. Not only has the two-day meet became incredibly informative in finding Cheltenham Festival winners, but it has created an early weekend away for passionate fans of the sport. Kempton’s Christmas FestivalHorse racing around the festive period is exceptionally popular, with this trend continuing in 2025 with a massive 4.6% growth in events between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Few meetings around the Christmas period are as popular as the two-day Kempton Festival, with key trials ahead of the Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup among the notable races on Boxing Day. The King George VI Chase is regarded as the second-most prestigious race on the National Hunt schedule, with its history dating back to 1937. Historic winners of the race include Desert Orchid and Kauto Star, while the 2025 renewal will be one that lives long in the memory after The Jukebox Man outstayed Banbridge, Jango Baie, and Gaelic Warrior to win by a head.
