Protect your eyes without breaking the bank

28/4/2025

Collaborative Post | While many people wear sunglasses due to the aesthetics and accessorizing nature, they actually have a function. Not only do they look nice, but they also help to protect the eyes from the sun, thus being an effective eye health item too. UV rays from the sun can be harmful, and this is the case even in the colder seasons or during cloudy weather. So wearing sunglasses when its bright outside can be very beneficial to your overall eye health. With this in mind, not only have sunglasses evolved over time to be a stylish item, but they have a strong function as well.

The dangers of UV radiation and how sunglasses protect your eyes

UV or ultraviolet rays are electromagnetic radiation with short wavelengths. They are emitted by the sun and can cause skin damage, early ageing, and increase cancer risks. There are different types of UV including UVA, UVB and UVC rays. When it comes to the sun and its harmful effects on the eye, there are various things to consider. For one, there is photokeratitis which is temporary eye damage, but it's similar to sunburn.

There can be long-term consequences though. These include perygium, also known as surfer's eye. This can require surgery if it's very bad. Additionally, you can develop cataracts, which causes blurry vision and gets worse over time. Finally, there is a risk of skin cancer in the area around the eyes when there is prolonged exposure to the sun without protection. The eyes of children are particularly susceptible to these issues, which means it's important for people in all age groups to wear sunglasses.

How sunglasses have evolved: from protection to fashion

In the past, sunglasses were designed purely for eye protection. However, with the rise of the fashion industry, this has changed over time. In the last century or so, sunglasses have slowly transitioned into an item of high fashion. Nowadays, sunglasses are seen as a fashion staple, and added to all types of outfits.

That being said, their original usage is not forgotten. So, while these glasses have changed shape to adapt to fashion trends, they still work as protection. In fact, many of these sunglasses work better than ever before as they come with a range of high-tech features. For instance, there are polarized lenses for more effective blocking of UV rays. And, for those with prescriptions, there are now prescription sunglasses to give better eye protection.

How to choose the right sunglasses for maximum protection

When looking for sunglasses though, there are some factors you should be considering. For instance, when looking for 100% UV protection, check for the UV 400 labelling instead. You should also be choosing sunglasses with polarized lenses. These reduce the glare of the sun, and are great for those who are driving or in water. Finally, you can look for sunglasses with the wrap-around style. This helps to block light from different angles, giving improved protection to the eye. You can also look at the different lenses. This is because lens categories differ in terms of the level of protection they offer. Importantly, price is not an indicator of protection level, as affordable sunglasses offer the same or better protection.

Cost vs quality: how to save on high-quality sunglasses

Of course, as with many things, high quality sunglasses can be very expensive. With this in mind, it's good to find ways to get them at reduced prices. You can choose to shop during sales or at outlet stores for one, as both these options can mean significant reductions. Alternatively, you can look out for discount codes and coupons. You can often find premium brands for a lot cheaper if you use a code in this manner.

Better still, there are voucher codes websites that list all these coupons and codes in one place. This way you don't have to search for these yourself. If you want to know more, take a look at this established platform that has offers for many brands and retailers, which helps you get great sunglasses but for a lot cheaper than you might otherwise. With that in mind, it's unadvisable to shop for unverified sunglasses, as they can have low quality lenses which won't protect your eyes from UV rays.

A good pair of sunglasses is a long-term investment in eye health. Discount codes provide a way to get protective eyewear without overspending. Make sure you've considered quality and affordability when making your choice.
