How to become a more savvy online shopper

2/12/2025

Collaborative Post | Shopping online is one of the most popular methods of purchasing. It is easy to compare prices, simple to navigate and you can do it in your pyjamas!

There are lots of pitfalls when shopping online, unfortunately. Scams, substandard products and unclear websites are all out there with the intention of parting you with your hard-earned cash. Here are some tips to help you become a savvier online shopper.

Understand the digital marketplace and your rights

Internet sales are becoming the norm, with fewer people visiting physical shops and opting to surf the web instead. Buying online does not mean your consumer rights have diminished, though.

According to the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, buying online gives you a 14-day grace period where you can request a return for any reason, even if you have changed your mind. This 14-day period does not apply to a purchase made in a physical shop.

If an item is significantly not as described or faulty, returns should be processed as normal. Most online shops have significantly generous returns policies, so make sure you check the website properly.

Learn how to spot deals and avoid common pitfalls

The internet is full of the same product being advertised for different prices. Before making a purchase, take time to compare your options on different websites. For products such as insurance, comparison websites are handy, though some companies aren’t on them.

Remember to read reviews of both the product and the company. This can give you valuable insight into the quality of the item as well as the reputation of the business.

High return rates and overly generous discounts are often red flags, so proceed with caution if you see them.

Choose payment methods and protect your personal data

Some payment methods offer better protection when shopping online than others. Credit cards offer high levels of protection for payments over £100. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act requires credit card companies to issue refunds when applicable.

Debit cards don’t have the same protection, but most banks have a chargeback policy where you can claim your money back. The bank will investigate and make a ruling.

Account security should always be a consideration. Make sure you have multi-factor authentication turned on so you can approve payments and spot any incorrect ones.

Prepare for returns, extra charges and the full cost of ownership

The cost of an item is usually all you will pay, but shopping online means there are other factors to add on. Postage is a common extra charge, taking the overall price higher. The postage then doubles should you need to complete a return.

Remember to check where you are buying from. If it is being shipped from overseas, you may need to pay import duty when it reaches the UK.
