Ideas For a 60th Birthday Celebration

8/8/2022

Collaborative Post | birthdays are a milestone that’s well worth celebrating, and after a few difficult years with many of us stuck indoors and unable to celebrate how we’d like, you could use this opportunity to spend some much-needed quality time with friends and loved ones. Here are some ideas for a 60th birthday celebration to remember.

Family BBQ

If you’re celebrating your birthday during the summer months, a barbecue is an excellent way to mark the occasion. Spending time with the family seems more important than ever after the pandemic, so treat your loved one to family time, presents and a personalised 60th birthday card.

A family barbecue can be as low-key or over-the-top as you like! You could keep it small with just close friends and family, some delicious food and plenty of drinks to toast to the birthday boy or girl. Or you can go all-out with garden décor, a beer barrow or bar cart, string lights and a fire pit for toasting smores. You could even pick a party theme and ask your guests to come in fancy dress. Popular BBQ party themes include tropical or beach parties, a campsite theme or you could throw it back to an earlier decade and have a 60s or 70s theme.

A Surprise Party

Surprise parties are a great way to show someone how much you care about their birthday and that you want to make it special for them, but make sure they’re the kind of person who will appreciate it as not everyone likes to be surprised! Speak to other people who know them well so you can put together the plans in secret and be sure to invite all of your loved one’s friends and family.

You could host a surprise party at their home but this will require some careful planning as they’ll need to be safely out of the way for the preparations and arrival of the guests. Designate a friend or family member to take them out somewhere as a ruse, giving you time to pop up the decorations and get everyone safely stashed away inside ready for their arrival. Alternatively, book a table or room at a restaurant, for example a Mediterranean restaurant Knightsbridge or another events venue, like a hotel or function room. Decorate the party space with banners and balloons. You could even do a photo wall, displaying all those special snaps of the birthday boy or girl throughout the years.

Book a Mini Break

For a milestone birthday, like a 60th, you may want to have a big celebration over a few days, in which case a mini break away is ideal. If they love the outdoors, then why not head to a beautiful part of the country such as the Lake District? You can spend your days exploring the local area and rambling through the countryside before heading back to your B&B or Airbnb and relaxing in front of the fire with a glass of wine. Or if a city break is more their thing, then why not plan a weekend in London instead? Book a luxury hotel room and tickets to see their favourite musical and squeeze in a bit of sightseeing to make their 60th birthday truly memorable.

How to stay safe when doing DIY

1/8/2022

Collaborative Post | The UK has always had a do-it-yourself streak, but in recent years DIY activities appear to have boomed significantly. Between younger generations discovering new hobbies, older millennials finding their way onto the property ladder at long last, and the coronavirus pandemic causing more people to fight boredom at home, DIY has become a hugely popular activity once again.

But with the increase in DIY activity, so too have DIY-related accidents and injuries increased. According to recent NHS statistics, there were more than 8,000 DIY-related hospital visits in 2020-21, a marked increase from previous years. If you’re fancying yourself as a bit of a home handyman and looking forward to picking up tools for the first time – whether to repair your home or prepare it for sale – what should you be doing to keep yourself safe

Personal Protective Equipment

First and foremost, you should ensure you have the right safety equipment for the work you’re planning to undertake – specifically, in the form of personal protective equipment or PPE. Items of PPE are considered a last-resort item in professional workplaces and construction sites, being the final intervention between a dangerous activity and the person carrying it out. As such, they are essential for keeping you safe.

If you’re going to be doing a lot of sawing and drilling, you should be wearing safety goggles to protect your eyes from debris, and gloves to protect your hands from splinters and sharp objects. Steel toe-capped boots are great for protecting your feet from dropped, heavy objects; general workwear such as overalls and boiler suits can keep your body safe from contact injuries with hot items or irritant materials

Following instructions and advice

If you’re new to a specific task or endeavour, you should make sure you’re following instructions and advice to a tee as you progress. You can hire a consultant to give you DIY tips and advice for the path forward, while manufacturer instructions can enable you to use new and complex tools with ease.

Of course, some mistakes and accidents are unavoidable – whether due to improper advice relating to a specific part of your home, or a faulty tool malfunctioning during use and causing injury. In cases such as these, though, you may have a strong case for a personal injury claim against the manufacturer or consultant in question.

First Aid Kit

With the knowledge that accidents can happen, and that some DIY risks are difficult to mitigate, you should make sure you have the right equipment for handling minor injuries close at hand. Building a small first aid kit is a simple and easy task; include bandages, plasters, antiseptic cream for small wounds and saline eye wash in the event of irritants entering your eye. In many cases, these can help prevent a small injury resulting in a hospital visit!
