5 destinations you need to add to your Italy itinerary

If you’re planning a tour of the country, in other words, making the right choices can be difficult. Let’s see if we can provide some inspiration, in the form of five must-see destinations for your tour.

Rome: The Eternal City

The Italian capital, perhaps unsurprisingly, contains a stunning array of landmarks. There are the ancient ones, like the Colosseum and the nearby Roman Forum, both of which are stunning. Then there’s the Vatican City, which is perfect for those who’d like to connect with the Catholic Church, and its impact on history (and art).

Venice: The Floating City

There’s no city in Italy (or, indeed, the world) quite like Venice. It’s small wonder that Jeff Bezos, who could have chosen any destination in the world for his wedding, decided to come here. The labyrinthine network of canals and alleyways is truly iconic – and during your stay, you’ll want to take a trip on a gondola, to see all that’s on offer. Sample the local ‘cicchetti’ while you’re here. You can think of these small dishes as a kind of Venetian tapas. They’re served at special bars, known as bàcari.

Amalfi Coast: Coastal Paradise

The pastel-shaded buildings that clamber across the cliffsides of the Amalfi Coast, just south of Naples, have lured in innumerable tourists over the years. Florence: The Heart of the Renaissance

This little city punches well above its weight when it comes to culture, music, and art. Cinque Terre: The Five Villages

The ‘Cinque Terre’ (or ‘Five Villages’) sit in the Northwest of the country. Colourful and iconic in the same way as the Amalfi Coast, they provide stunning views of the adjacent Ligurian Sea. They’re connected by a series of hiking trails, which means that you can easily move from one to the next, and thereby explore the entire region as part of a weeklong walking trip. Travel this part of the country with the aid of a pair of hiking boots, and you’ll be rewarded with views that aren’t accessible via other, more modern, means.
