Sugaring hair removal for women | how to remove facial hair on the top lip and chin

10/5/2026

Facial hair is a common but very frustrating concern for women, and it seems to appear or get worse in midlife when hormonal changes can make top lip and chin hair even more noticeable, it seems to get coarser and darker, and there are not many of us that will escape this midlife joy!  It is an ongoing battle for me and I hate it!  I am convinced everyone can see those dark little hairs and yet I can't see them myself - only with my specs, a magnifying mirror and good light - my only reassurance is my friends probably can't see them without their strong specs on either!

So what are the easiest and most effective ways to remove facial hair?  There are lots of well known at-home hair removal methods, including tweezers, wax strips, shaving and dermaplaning.  And lots of in-salon options too. But each method needs to be carried out regularly to keep it under control and the best method will depend on your skin type, the area you want to treat and whether you want a quick fix or longer lasting results.

In this blog post, I am sharing my thoughts on the best ways to remove facial hair, and specifically sugaring hair removal (because it is my favourite method) so I will explain what you need to bear in mind if you are trying to deal with top lip and chin hair in midlife, and if you're not then lucky you, I'm jealous!

How to remove facial hair on the top lip and chin

Why do women need to remove facial hair more often in midlife?

Hormones, for many women, facial hair becomes more noticeable during perimenopause and menopause. As oestrogen levels drop, some women find they develop darker upper lip hair, coarse chin hairs, more visible peach fuzz on the face with faster regrowth than before.

This is why facial hair removal for women is such a common topic (if you are brave enough to own up to it). It may feel frustrating, but it is very normal and nothing to be embarrassed about really, you are not alone and your fellow midlifers will be feeling the same.

Some common methods used to remove facial hair

There are several methods to choose from. Some are better for individual hairs, while others work well on larger areas like the upper lip.

Tweezing for chin hair removal
Tweezing works best if you only have a few coarse chin hairs to deal with. It is inexpensive, precise and ideal for an isolated hair or two.  But it isn't suitable for larger areas, can be time-consuming and may lead to irritation if overdone.

Wax kits for facial hair removal
Many women use wax kits at home to remove facial hair from the top lip. Waxing removes the hair from the root meaning it is longer-lasting than shaving and good for top lip hair, it is also quick once you get used to it.  But it can feel harsh on sensitive skin, it can cause redness and not everyone finds an at home wax kit easy to use.

Professional threading for facial hair removal
Threading is a popular salon treatment for facial hair removal in women. It is often used for the upper lip, brows and other small areas of the face.  Again it is precise, there are no chemicals involved and it is good for shaping (eyebrows) and tidying facial hair.  But it can be uncomfortable, it needs a salon visit and temporary redness is common.  I've used threading for eyebrows very successfully but felt it didn't lasted very long for facial hair.

Dermaplaning to remove facial hair and peach fuzz
Dermaplaning is often used to remove fine facial hair and dead skin cells at the same time.  It is quick and easy and leaves skin feeling smooth, makeup often sits better afterwards (it was recommended to me by a makeup artist and I have an at-home device) but it is less effective for coarse chin hairs, it needs regular upkeep and can irritate sensitive skin.  I've had dermaplaning in a salon and liked it a lot but regular treatments are needed to keep up with it and the at-home device did not deal with the coarser hair.

Hair removal creams
Some women prefer facial hair removal creams for convenience, although they are not suitable for everyone.  They are painless, fast and easy to use but they can irritate sensitive skin, they have a strong smell and patch testing is essential, even with the sensitive versions.

Laser or electrolysis for longer-term facial hair removal
If facial hair is a regular concern, some women choose professional treatments for longer-term reduction.  It can reduce regrowth over time and is useful for persistent hair growth.  But is is expensive and quite a time commitment to visit a salon regularly, it may not suit every skin tone or hair type.  I had electrolysis years ago but more hairs just kept appearing and then I had laser a couple of years ago which was very positive but the salon I was going to went into liquidation and I stopped.

What is sugaring hair removal?

Sugaring hair removal is a method of hair removal that uses a sugar-based paste to lift the hair from the root. Traditional hair sugaring paste is usually made with simple ingredients such as sugar, water and lemon.

Although sugaring has been around for centuries, it has become increasingly popular again as more women look for gentler, more natural-feeling ways to remove both facial and body hair.

Many people find that sugaring hair removal feels kinder to the skin than traditional waxing because the paste grips the hair rather than sticking to the skin itself. I personally favour sugaring because I experienced quite a few ingrown hairs after waxing, and I also find my skin feels smoother and less bumpy afterwards.

Why choose hair sugaring to remove facial hair?
For women dealing with top lip or chin hair, hair sugaring can be a really effective option. It removes the hair from the root, can leave the skin smoother for longer than shaving, uses simple ingredients and may feel gentler than some wax kits. It is also a practical choice for at-home facial hair removal.

Another reason some women prefer sugaring over shaving is that regrowth often feels softer and less stubbly. Shaving cuts the hair at the skin’s surface, which can make it feel more blunt as it grows back, while sugaring removes the hair from the root instead.

For women in midlife, when skin can feel more delicate and facial hair may become more noticeable, sugaring hair removal can be a useful and more natural option.

Sugaring hair removal vs wax kits
If you are deciding between hair sugaring and wax kits, it helps to think about your skin and how reactive it is. Sugaring is often seen as the gentler option, which is why it can be particularly appealing for delicate areas such as the upper lip. Wax kits are widely available and can be quick and effective, but they may feel harsher on sensitive facial skin.

For women with delicate or reactive skin, sugaring hair removal may feel like the better choice, although results and comfort can vary from person to person.

The Top Lip Kit from Sugarflick is an easy at-home sugaring hair removal kit for the top lip and chin

Sugarflick Top Lip Kit

I was sent the Sugarflick Top Lip Kit to try. This little kit has been created by Fee an experienced hair removal specialist of over 20 years. Using only natural sugar, she has combined all her knowledge into this kit and is proud that it is far superior to wax strips, harsh creams and tweezers that only snap the hair off at the root.  Fee wanted to make something that women, especially midlife women, could use at home to remove top lip and chin hair easily and simply (and you can even shape your brows and remove toe hairs too, basically use on any small areas where unwanted hair appears)!

I was introduced to sugaring back in 2019 when Lucie, a sugaring expert, was recommended to me and I was converted!  When she sadly closed her salon and moved abroad I couldn't find a replacement and swapped to waxing for a while but I ended up with a couple of (bikini) ingrown hairs that took ages to go so I had to find a new salon!  More searching and I am very happy to have a new local sugaring expert.

Sugaring is now part of my regular beauty routine, I visit Lynn every 4-5 weeks and always before a holiday!

Many of us find that unwanted facial hair becomes more noticeable in midlife, mainly because of those hormonal changes. If you take testosterone as part of HRT, this can sometimes increase hair growth a little too, but please do not let that put you off. Testosterone can have huge benefits for some women, so it is really just about understanding the possible side effects and having a reliable, easy-to-use hair removal method at home.

Review of the Top Lip Kit

I found the Sugarflick Top Lip Kit much easier to use than I expected. It takes a little preparation, but the actual process was quick and straightforward, and far less of a faff than I had imagined. There is a brief moment of discomfort, as you would expect with any hair removal method, but it was over very quickly. But it worked very well and my skin did not feel irritated or look particularly red afterwards.

Results from sugaring typically last around three weeks, although some sources say three to five weeks depending on your hair growth and the area being treated. In reality, facial hair often grows back a little faster than body hair, so I suspect I would probably use it more regularly than that.

What I liked most was how quick and manageable it felt. I usually have my top lip sugared professionally when I have my legs and bikini line done, but that is only every five or six weeks, so this feels like a very useful in-between option for at-home facial hair removal. Yes, there is a little bit of preparation involved, but it only took a few minutes, so it felt like a realistic addition to my beauty routine rather than a big faff.

Overall, I found the Sugarflick Top Lip Kit quick, effective and much easier to use than I had expected. For anyone looking for an at-home facial hair removal option between salon appointments, it feels like a practical and gentle way to keep on top of top lip hair without too much fuss.

How to use the Top Lip Kit

The Top Lip Kit contains everything needed for at-home facial sugaring: a 30g jar of natural sugar paste, wooden spatulas, paper strips, a rice-based barrier powder and full instructions.

Using the Top Lip Kit is simple:
  1. Cleanse the area to be treated thoroughly first.
  2. Prep the skin with the barrier powder.
  3. Heat the sugar paste using a bowl of hot water, immerse the jar for a few minutes.
  4. Apply a small amount of sugar paste using a wooden spatula or the handle of a teaspoon.
  5. Place a strip over the area and remove it as directed in the instructions.
  6. Repeat until the whole area is completed.
  7. Apply a soothing moisturising cream (like Aloe Vera) to the skin afterwards.

Sugarflick advises to never microwave the product and to read the instructions fully before use.

And remember ...

Patch test your skin with any new product first.
Avoid using any hair removal method on broken or irritated skin.
Use a gentle moisturiser afterwards (Aloe Vera is ideal).
Avoid strong exfoliants or retinol immediately after treatment.
Wear SPF if you are going out afterwards (you should wear SPF everyday)!

If you are looking for a gentle and practical way to remove facial hair, especially on the top lip and chin, then sugaring hair removal is absolutely worth trying.  There are so many different methods of hair removal available but for smoother skin and longer lasting results, I love sugaring.

Facial hair does seem to appear in midlife but try not to feel too embarrassed, you are not alone and your female friends will relate!  My daughter often prompts me (very kindly) mum you need to do your hair removal!  Find the right method for you and create a routine!
