If you follow a plant-based diet (or simply want a more sustainable option), you may have struggled to find a joint-focused alternative to animal-derived Type II collagen. Feel’s new Pro Collagen Type 2 for Joints takes a different approach: it uses a vegan, biomimetic profile designed to replicate human Type II collagen (the dominant collagen in cartilage). This supplement positions it as the world’s first vegan Type 2 collagen for joints, created with the VeCollal® Type 2 ingredient. (VeCollal). Feel Pro Collagen Type 2 for Joints has just launched and I was sent one to try. I am not vegan but a more sustainable option does appeal and then there is the all-important taste-test - if I don't like it I won't remember to keep it in my routine. Being consistent with daily use over several weeks - Feel recommend 90 days - is important, but evidence for vegan, bio-mimetic 'collagen' is looking positive and benefits can include more comfort and mobility, so if you are struggling with joint pain or swelling, then I recommend speaking to your doctor as well as introducing a supplement routine. Collagen is one of the most recommended and recognised supplements for both joints and skin, hair and nails especially in midlife and it is not often understood that there are two separate types (see more below). Finding a good vegan collagen can be a challenge, and of course you want one that is as good as - or better than - the animal-based ones, read on to understand more about collagen for joint health. The more widely recognised animal and marine collagens are very different to human collagen and do not provide all the essential amino acids required by the body plus these sources are not sustainable and are much more likely to be contaminated with pesticides, heavy metals and toxins as well as there being animal welfare concerns. Therefore, many people would prefer to find a high-quality, sustainable 'vegan' collagen. Feel Pro Collagen Type 2 for JointsThe Feel Pro Collagen Type 2 for Joints has been specifically created to target comfort, mobility and cartilage support and comes in two flavours, Watermelon and Vanilla & Mango. It is a powder form of collagen and can be diluted in water or added to smoothies. It includes resistant (digestion-resistant) dextrin, a soluble fibre with prebiotic effects; unlike standard maltodextrin, resistant dextrin largely escapes small-intestinal digestion and may support gut health and steadier glycaemic responses. As we age, collagen levels naturally decrease, and we begin to notice more aches and pains, stiff joints, less elasticity in our skin and slower recovery after exercise. Feel Pro Collagen Type 2 for Joints is an excellent vegan option to target. joints without the animal ingredients. And the evidence is positive. The WOMAC score is a validated and widely used clinical measure for osteoarthritis symptoms and one doctors use to track joint discomfort, stiffness and mobility and Feel has demonstrated a significant improvement. In a small 12-week study of VeCollal® Type 2 (n=10), participants reported 44% less joint discomfort, 67% less stiffness and 61% better physical function on the validated WOMAC index; Feel also notes improvements can start from 8 weeks. What is the difference between Type I and Type II collagen?Type II collagen (cartilage and joints) There are 28 known collagen types in the body and Type II is concentrated in cartilage, the smooth, cushiony tissue that helps joints glide. Having lower Type II can show up as morning stiffness, creaky knees and hips and reduced range of motion. A joint-friendly lifestyle still matters, so include progressive strength work, low-impact movement, good footwear and a healthy body weight. Nutrition can help too (adequate protein, vitamin C; and consider joint-focused supplements - traditional animal-derived Type II or newer vegan/bio-mimetic formulas). As always, if you have persistent pain or swelling, check in with your doctor. Type I collagen (skin, hair, bones and tendons) Type I is the most abundant collagen in the body and the main 'scaffolding' for skin, hair, nails, bones, tendons and ligaments. When Type I declines, we begin to see fine lines, dryness and a loss of firmness, alongside slower post-exercise recovery. Helpful habits include daily SPF, a protein-rich diet (plus vitamin C to support collagen formation), strength training and barrier-friendly skincare (think retinoids, peptides and ceramides). Supplements aimed at Type I target skin/hair/nails rather than joints. Feel has different options available for Type 1 collagen (choose from powder, powder sachets and gel form) to target skin, hair and nails. I've not tried this vegan collagen supplement for long enough to state any significant changes, but Feel is a brand I trust and recognise, I love their sustainable approach, they use zero plastic packaging for example. The watermelon flavour dissolved easily, was easy to drink, refreshing and very tasty, I have no problem incorporating this into my routine. And I hope in a few weeks I will begin to notice that it is easier to get off the sofa!
