More midlife spring style with sterling silver jewellery | my 3-piece jewellery capsule from John Garland Taylor

29/3/2026

I love the simplicity of silver jewellery, it’s a modern and easy to wear style. And while I often lean towards gold, I still reach for silver regularly (and mix silver and gold too). Silver works on most skin tones, it’s all about pairing it with the right colours (navy, charcoal, white, black, or even a bright pop of colour like pink).  I feel more pulled together when I add my jewellery and a lot of my basic everyday pieces are silver - like my ring and bracelets.

I was recently been gifted three pieces of silver jewellery from John Garland Taylor Jewellery and they are exactly the kind of staples I love - simple and timeless, it's jewellery that suits my real, everyday life.

In this post I’m sharing some spring outfits featuring a 3-piece silver jewellery capsule, along with a few useful tips on buying sterling silver, the importance of comfort (especially earrings), and how to keep silver looking its best.

This is a gifted blog post and contains a 10% off discount code.

How I'm styling silver jewellery in midlife

The pieces in my John Garland Taylor silver capsule

The items I chose from the Molly Collection are:

  • The Silver Circle Pendant Necklace (25mm also available in 45mm).
  • Matching Silver Circle Stud Earrings.
  • And a classic Silver Bangle.

I love the circle design, it ties everything together, but each piece also works on its own if you want a more minimal look.

When I choose everyday jewellery I want an elevated look but without being flashy, I need a wearable design that looks modern but timeless and I certainly need comfortable and unfussy so I'm not fidgeting with it or needing to remove it to do my jobs around the house!

If you are thinking updating your silver jewellery collection, this kind of matching set is a fab shortcut: it makes outfits look planned even when you’ve dressed in five minutes.  Something I do more often now I have the new puppy!

It also makes the perfect gift!

Sterling silver explained

I learnt all sorts of new facts when researching this post!  Did you know ...

Sterling silver is usually marked 925 which means it’s 92.5% silver, mixed with a small amount of other metal (often copper) to give it strength. Pure silver is quite soft, so sterling silver holds its shape better for jewellery you wear often.

A few buying tips:
  • Look for hallmarks / 925 where possible.
  • Decide what finish you like: high shine vs a softer, satin look.
  • Think about weight, too light can feel flimsy; too heavy can be uncomfortable (especially for earrings).

How I'm styling silver jewellery - for the evening or a posh lunch out

For evenings or a posh lunch out, silver can feel very chic especially with black and this is a simple outfit that is guaranteed to suit any occasion but I'm thinking dinner or lunch out when you want to look a little more elevated.

I'm wearing wide leg black trousers in a regular length from Marks & Spencer, with a beautiful black and white polka dot blouse from LK Bennett, then I've added a black leather kitten heel boot and a silver handbag and popped over a cream blazer from Zara. All previous season but I've listed similar styles below.

The circle shape feels modern against a classic print like polka dots, and silver works beautifully with a monochrome outfit, it's crisp, clean and a bit more grown up glam than gold (depending on your style).

For the daytime with pink cashmere with ecru jeans

My favourite way to wear silver is with soft, classic styles, especially a higher neck to show off the detail of the Molly necklace.

I'm wearing my pink cashmere jumper from Uniqlo (easy, everyday and affordable), a pair of ecru wide leg cropped jeans from Marks & Spencer, then I've added my flat Mary Jane shoes and a silver leather belt.

The Molly pendant necklace sits perfectly over the knit and the circle design complements the round neck and gives the outfit a focal point, while the stud earrings keep it simple and fresh and perfect for everyday.

I love the bangle with a knit because you can push the sleeves up slightly and let it peek out, it’s such an easy way to elevate a casual look.  The silver bangles from John Garland Taylor come in three sizes, Small, Medium and Large and there is a video to explain how to measure on their website.  I am wearing the Medium in the Molly Silver Bangle.

Styling tips for your silver jewellery

Silver looks fabulous with navy blue ... if you wear a lot of navy blue (I do), silver is one of the easiest pairings. Navy has that classic, smart feel, and silver adds brightness without competing.  A navy knit, cream trousers or classic blue jeans and silver - perfect.

And for the all important comfort factor?

Even when we're wearing beautiful jewellery we want to feel comfortable so it actually gets worn, here are a few things to consider:

Stud earrings are easiest, light, secure and no snagging on hair or scarves.  I also favour huggies or a small drop style.  Look for a secure back that doesn't dig in.

I wear my Nomination charm bracelets every day, along with my Tiffany beads and a silver chain so a bangle is a bit of a change for me and not one I will wear around the house. But getting the fit right really helped which is why I loved how John Garland Taylor offer the different sizes for bangles.  Bangles are usually too big for me, not this time!

I have never taken my wedding ring off and I have a Pandora silver ring I wear on the other hand every day, my engagement ring was a later addition (we didn't officially get engaged)!

Simple stacking rings are a lovely option if you want to upgrade your capsule jewellery collection but make sure you get the size right - finger size can fluctuate due to heat,  hormones, travel etc.  A slightly wider band feels more comfortable and is less prone to feeling tight.

The perfect silver jewellery capsule set

If you only buy three silver pieces and you’re starting from scratch, this is the trio I’d recommend every time:

Simple everyday earrings - studs you can wear on repeat.
A necklace that works with knits and t-shirts (a pendant or circle like the Molly).
One wrist piece, a bangle or bracelet that feels comfortable.

That’s your capsule then add rings or statement earrings later, but these three give maximum wear for minimum effort.

John Garland Taylor have a big selection of sets available to buy together or individually.

You can shop the Molly Collection here.

How to care for sterling silver (to keep it bright)

Silver can tarnish over time which is totally normal, but it’s easy to keep it looking fresh:

  • Store pieces in a pouch or jewellery box, away from humidity.
  • Put jewellery on after perfume.
  • A quick buff with a soft polishing cloth brings back shine (add one at checkout)!
  • If you’re not wearing it for a while, keep it airtight (a little zip bag works)!

The history behind John Garland Taylor Jewellery

John Garland Taylor Jewellery is a British, family-run brand making timeless silver and gold jewellery from their workshop in Warwickshire. Their pieces are designed to be worn and loved for years, the kind of everyday luxury that feels special, but never fussy and they offer a thoughtful alternative to mass-produced jewellery.

I really like is their focus on craftsmanship. They use responsibly sourced metals from Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter, and each item is made by hand (shaped, hammered and polished) rather than simply churned out on a production line.

They also pay attention to the customer experience: jewellery arrives beautifully packaged and gift-ready, there are online sizing guides to help you choose the right fit, and they offer next working day delivery plus 90 days of free resizing for extra peace of mind. And with lots of five-star reviews, they’ve built a loyal following.

Behind the brand is John Garland Taylor himself, who originally trained as a smith and spent years restoring historic armour, including work for places like Warwick Castle and the National Trust, before turning to jewellery design over the past four decades. That heritage really comes through in the finished pieces: classic designs, beautifully made, and created with longevity in mind, ideal for anyone who values quality, timeless style, and a story behind what they wear.
Wearing my jewellery capsule for lunch out with my son and his girlfriend
I love my new jewellery from the Molly Collection, it is exactly the style of jewellery I choose, timeless, wearable and confidence boosting!  It simply makes my outfits look more finished.  I can't go out without my jewellery or my makeup, I'd feel undressed!
