I'm off to Scotland at the end of April and I am told I need to plan my outfits for 'four seasons in one day' so even if it will be spring, the reality is that the weather in the Scottish Highlands is still going to be unpredictable. We are going to be doing the NC500 and our trip will involve mostly outdoor activities including lots of walking, we will be exploring the beaches, the lochs, the hills and some towns and cities too. Fortunately I don't need to worry about getting everything in a suitcase, we are driving to Scotland in our Ford Wildtrak so there will be a lot of space to throw in waterproof trainers, hiking boots, coats and warm layers! There will also be a food cupboard, a portable fridge and still plenty of room for us! This is a gifted collaboration. ![]() Durness, Scotland (Photo by Eric Fraser on Unsplash) The right footwear is going to make all the difference to the comfort of my holiday wardrobe and waterproof trainers are essential for staying comfortable and dry no matter what the weather throws at me. And if I choose sensibly I can paddle at the water's edge too! Our two West Highland White Terriers are coming with us and they love to enjoy the water and I often end up with wet feet! For the perfect blend of function and style, I decided to look closer at the adidas waterproof trainers, with their Sambas and Gazelles still being so popular, I wanted to see what else might be suitable! Why waterproof trainers are a must-haveStay comfortable in any weather - waterproof trainers keep your feet dry, preventing discomfort from soggy socks and blisters caused by prolonged exposure to moisture. Whether you're power-walking through puddles or wandering along the beach, they ensure your day remains comfortable. Ideal for travel - if you love travelling, a good pair of waterproof trainers can be a game-changer. They eliminate the need to pack multiple shoes as they are ideal for both dry and wet days, plus they are often lightweight and breathable so they are perfect for every day. Enhance performance and safety - waterproof trainers are designed with a superior grip which means they can prevent slips on wet ground and uneven terrain, so they are ideal for long walks with the dogs while we are exploring Scotland! Key features to look for in waterproof trainersWaterproof but breathable - look for trainers with GORE-TEX or similar, they keep water out but allow moisture from sweat to escape, this prevents overheating and keeps your feet fresh all day. High-traction outer sole - a good pair of waterproof trainers should have a rubber outer sole with deep grooves for an excellent grip and a slip-resistant sole. Lightweight and flexible - stiff, heavy shoes can make outdoor adventures less fun, choose trainers with lightweight cushioning and flexible soles to support natural movement but still giving all day comfort. Secure fit and support - a secure lace system, padded ankle support and a cushioned midsole are key for stability and comfort, look for arch support and shock absorption to reduce strain on feet and joints. I think investing in a good pair of waterproof trainers or hiking boots will be exactly what both me and my husband need for our NC500 adventure! Spring in Scotland - our NC500 adventureWe have a packed 11-night itinerary planned. We will be staying in Kendal in the Lake District on the way up, then we have a couple of nights near Inverness, before joining the NC500 driving east to west, we are staying at Ulbster (not far from John O'Groats) then drive across the very top of Scotland and stay on the west coast at Lochinver before heading back down to the Loch Ness area, finally we start our journey back south to Ambleside and home! We are very much looking forward to exploring the area, there is a lot to fit in and it will an outdoor trip so I won't be worrying about hair straighteners or summer dresses! As well as getting my footwear right, I will also be taking comfortable leggings, water resistant outdoor trousers (from ACAI), my waterproof multi-way jacket (also from ACAI), a warm fleece layer and gilet (both from Superdry). I've been reading the book Destination NC500 and watching Britain’s Most Beautiful Road on Channel 4 for inspiration, and I have to say, it looks absolutely breathtaking! Described as Scotland’s Unmissable Coastal Road Trip, the NC500 was actually our son's idea, and I couldn’t resist the challenge. Then when I was offered a PR stay in Ulbster, I started planning to see if we could make it all the way to the northernmost point of the British Isles. We love travelling the world, but sometimes the most stunning destinations are right on our doorstep, without the hassle of airports!
