The best airport outfits for women over 50 | travel day ideas that are comfortable and stylish24/8/2026 It's nearly time for my 60th birthday trip to Sardinia and I can't wait! I will of course be packing my favourite summer dresses, bikinis and beachwear but I also like choose what I wear to travel in very carefully! Airport outfits for women over 50 need to work hard. They need to be comfortable enough for sitting, walking through the airport, standing in queues, getting in and out of cars and dealing with whatever the weather decides to do at both ends. But I still want to feel well-presented and stylish and most importantly not feel too crushed or creased so that when I walk into my hotel (or onto the cruise ship, or villa), I feel confident. Now I'm in my late 50s, I am no longer prepared to be uncomfortable just for the sake of an outfit. I want to feel like me, but the me who can sit on a plane, manage a suitcase, cope with airport toilets and still arrive feeling reasonably fresh. So here are my thoughts on airport outfits for women over 50, including the travel day outfit ideas I have worn! What makes a good airport outfit?A good airport outfit needs to be simple, comfortable and practical, but not scruffy. I want pieces that move with me, fabrics that do not feel restrictive and layers that I can add or take off easily and certainly nothing that creases (so no linen)! Airports are strange places for temperature, one minute you are too hot in a queue, the next you are chilly on the plane, then you arrive somewhere warmer and wonder why you wore quite so much. So layers are essential. I also think about waistbands now. Anything too tight around the middle is a no from me especially for travel. Sitting for a long time, airport snacks, a glass of something on the plane and a bit of travel bloating all mean comfort is important. Start with comfortable shoesAirports usually involve a lot of walking! Even if you are not rushing, there is always the walk from car park to check-in, standing around at security, the dash to the gate, negotiating airplane steps, then at the other end, baggage reclaim, transfers or collecting a hire car. For that reason, I think trainers are one of the best airport outfit choices. A comfortable pair of classic white trainers are especially useful because they are practical, flattering and easy to style with so many outfits, I'm wearing the Switch Trainers from Hotter Shoes. They work with leggings, cropped trousers, jeans and even a simple jersey dress, and black is always a good option when you want something that feels a little smarter but less obviously sporty. I also like the fact that trainers are comfortable when you arrive. If you are collecting a suitcase, finding your way around a new airport or heading straight out for lunch before you can properly unpack, comfortable shoes make all the difference. Outfit formulas that work for a travel dayThe jersey dress A jersey dress is often my favourite travel option, especially in spring, summer and autumn. It has movement, it does not dig in and it can look instantly more polished than leggings or joggers. I would wear a soft jersey dress with trainers, a denim jacket or lightweight cardigan and a crossbody bag. It is easy, comfortable and simple to layer - see my stripe dress above and my navy dress further down! A dress is also lovely if you are travelling somewhere warm because you arrive already feeling holiday-ready. Whatever dress you choose, make sure the fabric does not crease too much and it is a length you feel comfortable in. I prefer something around midi length as it feels easy and flattering (not too short or revealing when you sit down, but won't create a hazard like a maxi might when you up a flight of stairs. Leggings with a longer layer Leggings are hard to beat for comfort, especially on an early start or a longer journey. But I do think they need a little styling so they feel more travel outfit than gym outfit. I would wear leggings with a t-shirt, soft shirt or a lightweight hoodie, then add a denim jacket, trench, gilet or relaxed blazer depending on the weather. This is the sort of outfit that works well if you want maximum comfort but still want to look stylish. Add trainers, sunglasses and a crossbody bag and it feels simple but considered, very sports-luxe airport chic! Cropped or 3/4 trousers Cropped trousers or 3/4 trousers are a really good option for travel. Full length wide-leg trousers might be best avoided (as much as I love them) but they will drag on the floor when you go to the toilet and not all airport toilets are dry and clean. Even cropped wide leg pair are susceptible to getting too close to the floor when you pull down and sit down!! Whereas a dress goes up! But they are easy to move in, they look a little smarter than leggings and they work beautifully with trainers or flat sandals. I would wear them with a simple vest t-shirt, a fine knit or a relaxed shirt, then add a jacket or cardigan for the plane. For my cruise I wore wide leg navy trousers with a smarter knitted waistcoat. Layers I like to take A good travel day layer needs to be light enough to carry but useful enough to justify taking. For me that usually means one of the following:
I always like to have something I can put on quickly on the plane, especially if the air conditioning is cold. But I also like a layer that makes the outfit feel finished when I arrive. My favourite options, for warmer days, a lightweight cardigan, styled around my shoulders and tied loosely with a cashmere wrap in my bag (I really recommend the brand new recycled cashmere wraps from Nearly New Cashmere). For cooler day, a soft hoodie, a relaxed blazer or a trench coat. The accessories that make travel easier A crossbody bag is my favourite for travel because it keeps everything close and leaves my hands free for luggage - I recommend Sofia & Spritz for the best ones (use FIFTYFAB10 for 10% off your first order). I also like a tote or cabin bag that can hold a book, sunglasses, lip balm, phone charger, tissues and some day one essentials (if baggage goes missing). I can also pop my crossbody bag in the top of my tote if needed - my favourite is my Longchamp Le Pilage in navy blue or charcoal grey. I usually wear my hat rather than packing it but it is something extra to carry! What to avoid with your travel outfitThere are a few things I have learnt to avoid on a travel day. I would not wear anything too tight around the waist, anything that creases badly, stiff jeans that dig in when sitting or shoes that are not properly broken in. I also avoid complicated belts and too many buttons because airport toilets and small plane loos are awkward enough without making it harder. I am also careful with very pale trousers or anything too precious. Travel days involve coffee, luggage, sun cream, hand sanitiser and sitting in all sorts of places. I want to feel stylish, but I do not want to spend the whole journey worrying about what I am wearing. I learnt the hard way when I wore white jeans and spilt fruit compote on them at breakfast in Pret at Gatwick. So there are my thoughts on looking stylish at the airport! I am very envious of the super-wealthy women who seem to float through airports in white linen (summer) or faux fur (winter ski trips) but that isn't my reality!
